Basic Components and Operation

  • Combustion: The high-pressure, high-temperature air reaches the combustion chamber, where it is mixed with fuel (usually aviation kerosene) and ignited. This combustion process releases a tremendous amount of energy, further increasing the temperature and volume of the air.
  • Exhaust: The hot gases from the combustion chamber then flow into the turbine, causing its blades to spin. This spinning action drives the compressor and the fan at the front of the engine, sustaining the engine’s operation. Finally, the gases exit the engine through the nozzle at the back, creating the thrust that propels the aircraft forward.

The Role of the Fan and Bypass Ratio

In a turbofan engine, not all air taken in by the fan passes through the core (compressor, combustion chamber, and turbine). A significant portion of the air is bypassed around the core and ejected directly out of the back of the engine. This bypassed air provides additional thrust and contributes to the engine’s efficiency and noise reduction.

The ratio of the air that bypasses the engine core to the air that passes through it is known as the bypass ratio. High-bypass engines, commonly used in commercial airliners, are quieter and more fuel-efficient compared to low-bypass engines, which are typically found in military aircraft where high thrust and speed are prioritized.

Modern engines are more powerful, efficient, and environmentally friendly than their predecessors.
